Following the release of an internal memo from the FBI, which revealed that the agency considered Catholics to be potential terrorists, Republicans have called on the Justice Department and FBI to explain their actions.
A coalition of Republican state attorneys general, including Jason Miyares of Virginia, demanded answers from the FBI and the US Attorney General after learning that the agency circulated a report linking radical Catholics to white supremacist groups.
In a letter to FBI Director Christopher Wray and Garland, the chief legal officers of the states stated that the agency was discriminating against Catholics due to their religious beliefs.
They demanded that the FBI stop targeting Christians and other religious groups. They stated that their constituents' rights are protected by the Constitution.
According to the memo, which was released on January 23, radicalized Catholics are being viewed as potential terrorists. It also cited left-wing sources who it claimed were proof of white supremacy in Catholicism.
The FBI retracted the memo this week, saying that it did not meet the agency's standards. It also stated that an internal review would be conducted.
The letter stated that the FBI's targeting of Catholics for investigation as potential terrorists was unconstitutional, deeply un-American, and unacceptable.
According to the Republican attorneys general, millions of people flocked to the US due to their religious freedom. They also accused the FBI of instigating anti-Catholic sentiments by targeting Catholics.

The AGs stated that the memo accused the governor of Virginia and the Supreme Court of unfairly discriminating against Catholics through their actions in areas such as immigration, LGBTQ protections, and abortion rights.
The chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Jim Jordan, accused the FBI of trying to suppress the First Amendment by releasing the memo.
In response to the report, Jordan criticized the FBI. According to him, the agency was investigating the possibility of white supremacy against Catholics. He noted that the Democrats were using the First Amendment to weaponize the government.
