White Law Student Sues HBCU for $2 Million Alleging Racial Discrimination

A white student has sued the Howard University law school, claiming racial discrimination. The plaintiff is seeking $2 million in damages.

In 2020, Michael Newman was a student at Howard University. However, in September 2022, he was expelled due to what he claimed was a hostile environment.

According to Newman, his expulsion was caused by his comments in a group chat. In the chat, he said that he was part of the African-American community and that government was only responsible for causing problems. The speaker at the symposium then said that if Harris and Biden were to become the next president, they would be able to usher in a new era of environmental justice.

During this period, Newman made a statement about how he felt, and he compared his experience to that of an African-American student in a predominantly white school. His classmates then became hostile, and they were planning on seeking his expulsion.

Newman's lawsuit states that due to the mob's presence, he suffered from anxiety and depression. It also claims that he was humiliated and had suicidal thoughts.

During this period, Reggie McGahee, the university's diversity recruiting director, reportedly told Newman that he had become the "most hated student" in the school since he started his career there.

Newman was eventually told to write an apology to his classmates, and this was due to his insensitivity.

Another professor then spent a lot of time talking about Newman's racial insensitivities in a class.

According to his classmates, Newman was causing them severe stress and disrupting their studies.

After they saw Newman's private Twitter account, his classmates confronted him. They learned that he had posted an image of a slave with a disfigured back, with the comment, "We don't know what he was doing before this picture was taken." Newman then attempted to explain that he was only trying to explain away the videos of police brutality.

Newman then tried to explain himself in a four-part letter, but his classmates still called it amanifesto.

A report by Fox News claimed that Newman was secretly recorded by the dean of the school of law, who suggested that he transfer to another school. She allegedly accused him of racial harassment.

According to Newman's lawsuit, during a town hall meeting, which was conducted by hundreds of people, the dean of the law named Holley called his letters "disturbing." She also allegedly blocked him from speaking up in defense of himself.

In her statement, Newman was accused of disturbing the learning environment and harassing members of the Howard Law community.

In his complaint, Newman accused her of creating a hostile academic environment and perpetuating racial discrimination and threats.

A panel was then convened to discuss the complaint, and it ruled that Newman should be expelled.

He is seeking $2 million in damages, which he claims are for emotional distress, pain, and loss of reputation.
