More than 50 Democrat lawmakers ran away to hide in Illinois, New York, and Massachusetts rather than do the work Texans elected them to do. They left because they knew they would lose a vote on new congressional maps that would help Republicans win more seats.
Governor Greg Abbott did exactly what any strong leader should do. He ordered the Texas Department of Public Safety to find these runaway Democrats and bring them back to do their jobs. Abbott also signed arrest warrants to force these politicians to return and represent the people who voted for them.
Judge Andrew Napolitano says these Democrats will eventually come crawling back when their bank accounts start hurting. The fleeing lawmakers face hefty fines of 500 dollars every single day they stay away from work. Most working Americans would be fired immediately for abandoning their responsibilities like this.
These Democrat politicians claim they are fighting for democracy, but they are really just throwing a tantrum. They cannot win the vote fairly, so they are trying to stop the entire process. This is the same party that spent years crying about Republicans being a threat to democracy.
President Trump supports the new congressional maps because they will help Republicans gain up to five more seats in Congress. Democrats know these maps follow the law and reflect how Texans actually vote. That is exactly why they are so desperate to stop the vote from happening.
The Texas Legislature only meets for 140 days every two years, making every day precious for getting important work done. These selfish Democrats are wasting taxpayer time and money with their political theater. They are hurting all Texans by blocking critical legislation about everything from flood relief to public safety.
Governor Abbott has the power to call as many special sessions as needed until this work gets finished. The Democrats cannot hide in other states forever while collecting their taxpayer-funded salaries. Abbott should consider removing any lawmaker who refuses to return and do their sworn duty.
Real Texans work hard every day and expect their elected officials to do the same. These Democrats have shown they care more about their political games than serving the people of Texas. When they finally slink back to Austin, voters will remember who stood with Texas and who ran away when the going got tough.
