A beautiful young Ukrainian refugee named Iryna Zarutska came to America seeking safety and freedom. Instead, she was brutally murdered by a career criminal on a Charlotte train in broad daylight. This 23-year-old woman fled war in Ukraine only to die at the hands of a violent repeat offender who should have been locked up.
Iryna was living the American dream, working toward becoming a veterinary assistant and caring for neighborhood pets. She was an artist who loved sculpting and designing clothes. Her family escaped Ukraine’s war hoping for a better life in America, but liberal policies failed to protect this innocent woman.
The killer, Decarlos Brown Jr., had a long criminal record including robbery with a dangerous weapon. He spent five years in prison but was back on the streets due to weak sentencing. This 34-year-old thug had mental health issues and a history of violence that everyone ignored.
President Trump held up photos of Iryna and her killer to show America what soft-on-crime Democrat policies really cost. He called out the failed leadership that puts criminals first and victims last. Trump promised to make American cities safe again just like he did in Washington DC.
This murder was completely preventable if we had tough prosecutors and strong judges. Brown should never have been on that train that night if we had real consequences for violent crimes. Instead, liberal district attorneys and bleeding-heart judges let dangerous criminals roam free.
Attorney General Pam Bondi called this killing a direct result of failed soft-on-crime policies. The Justice Department filed federal charges that could put Brown away for life or even result in the death penalty. Finally, we have leaders who will fight for victims instead of coddling criminals.
Charlotte officials scrambled to add more security after this tragedy, but it was too little too late. They are rolling out bike patrols and urban vehicles now, but Iryna is already dead. We need prevention, not just reaction after innocent people are murdered.
