A Ukrainian refugee who escaped war only to be murdered on American soil. Iryna Zarutska came to Charlotte in 2022 fleeing Putin’s invasion of her homeland. She thought she would be safe in America. She was wrong.
On August 22nd, the 23-year-old artist was riding a light rail train when career criminal Decarlos Brown Jr. stabbed her to death. The attack was completely random and unprovoked. Surveillance video captured the horrific murder that has shocked the nation.
Brown had been arrested dozens of times over the past decade. His rap sheet includes robbery with a dangerous weapon, breaking and entering, and larceny. He served five years in prison but was back on the streets. Liberal prosecutors had dropped almost all of his charges.
This killer should never have been walking free in our communities. Soft-on-crime Democrats have turned our cities into hunting grounds for predators. Their failed policies put violent criminals back on the street while innocent people pay the price.
Zarutska fled a war zone only to be murdered by a thug who should have been locked up. She was building a new life in America with her family. Her dreams were crushed by a system that protects criminals instead of victims.
President Trump spoke about this tragedy and called the killer a lunatic. He understands what real Americans know – we need tough law and order policies. We cannot let violent criminals terrorize our communities.
North Carolina Rep. Mark Harris is absolutely right to condemn these weak-on-crime policies. When we refuse to lock up repeat offenders, innocent people die. This young woman’s blood is on the hands of every liberal prosecutor who goes easy on violent criminals.
America should be a beacon of hope for people fleeing oppression. Instead, our cities have become dangerous because Democrats care more about criminals than victims. We must demand justice for Iryna and safety for all law-abiding Americans.
