Taxpayer Money for NPR? Lawmakers Demand Answers from CEO

NPR CEO Katherine Maher got slammed in a heated hearing this week. Lawmakers blasted her old tweets and demanded to know why taxpayers should fund NPR. Republican leaders called NPR a leftist propaganda machine. They said it’s time to cut off the cash.

Maher’s past tweets came back to bite her. She once said America is built on “black plunder and white democracy.” She called looting “counterproductive” but didn’t condemn it. She even took a day off work to read a book pushing reparations. These tweets show NPR’s top boss has radical views, not mainstream ones.

At the hearing, Rep. Brandon Gill grilled Maher about her tweets. He asked if she still believes America is racist. She dodged the questions. Gill also brought up an NPR story about “genderqueer dinosaur lovers.” He asked if that’s a good use of tax dollars. Maher had no good answer.

NPR gets millions from taxpayers every year. But its audience is shrinking. Most listeners are wealthy white liberals in cities. Rural Americans don’t tune in. Yet everyone’s taxes pay for NPR’s woke programming. Republicans say this is unfair. They argue NPR could survive without government handouts.

Maher claims NPR is “unbiased.” But her actions prove otherwise. She suspended a veteran NPR editor who exposed the network’s left-wing bias. She called Trump a “deranged racist.” She even said the First Amendment makes it “tricky” to fight “misinformation.” Translation: free speech gets in her way.

The hearing exposed NPR’s real mission. It’s not about news—it’s about pushing far-left ideas. Stories about policing, race, and gender are soaked in activist talking points. NPR hires staff based on skin color, not skill. They aim to “dismantle whiteness,” not inform the public.

Trump supports defunding NPR. His allies in Congress are pushing hard. They say ending taxpayer funding would save money and stop the bias. With America drowning in debt, wasting cash on NPR makes no sense. Let it compete fairly like every other business.

NPR doesn’t deserve a penny from hardworking Americans. Its leaders preach division and hate this country. The hearing proved NPR is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. It’s time to pull the plug and let NPR sink or swim on its own.
