Victoria Toensing and Joe diGenova didn’t mince words on The Chris Salcedo Show — they called out Senate Republicans for abdicating their duty by failing to confirm President Trump’s handpicked U.S. attorneys. Their frustration is the frustration of millions of Americans who expect the GOP to actually fight for conservative nominees instead of placating the left.
The so‑called “blue slip” tradition has become a procedural cudgel that Democrats wield to block qualified prosecutors and judges, and even Republicans on the Judiciary Committee have been loath to push back. The recent resignation of Alina Habba as acting U.S. attorney in New Jersey only underscores how badly the confirmation process has broken down.
Toensing pointed out a shocking statistic: only three U.S. attorneys have been confirmed so far, a far cry from the swift action conservatives expect when a Republican president fills key law‑and‑order posts. With Senator John Thune controlling the Senate calendar and a GOP majority, there is no plausible excuse for letting these vacancies fester while the left celebrates delay and obstruction.
If Democrats insist on weaponizing delays, Republicans must be willing to change the rules — and Thune has already signaled he’s prepared to do exactly that to speed confirmations when obstruction becomes the norm. This isn’t radical; it’s a necessary correction after years of the minority abusing norms to thwart the will of the voters and undermine governance.
Enough with the “gentleman’s agreements.” Conservatives have been told to show restraint while the left stacks the judiciary and fills key posts with activists. It’s time for GOP leaders to stop treating Senate customs as sacred when those customs are being weaponized against our priorities and our nominees.
Senator Thune shouldn’t let the Senate go home until these U.S. attorneys and other solid nominees are confirmed; the American people elected Republicans to govern and to secure the rule of law. If the GOP will not act with urgency and toughness now, voters should remember who abandoned the fight when our institutions and liberties were on the line.
