In response to the data released by the Biden administration regarding the number of illegal immigrants coming into the U.S., Oklahoma Senator James Lankford demanded an explanation from the government. According to a letter obtained by the DCNF, Lankford noted that the data was inaccurate.
In a letter to the Department of Justice, Lankford asked for information about the process by which the agency collects data about the released illegal immigrants. The DCNF revealed earlier that ICE had been publishing erroneous information about the number of immigrants apprehended in the US who were released with GPS monitoring.
According to the DCNF, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was underreporting how many illegal immigrants were released without being monitored by GPS devices by over 18,000%. Moreover, it was misreporting how many immigrants were apprehended using GPS tracking devices.
After the agency fixed the data, it apologized for the errors.
"Lankford said that the inaccurate data about the released immigrants was revealed in reports about the agency's Alternative to Detention program. According to him, the data showed that the number of immigrants being monitored by the GPS ankle monitor was significantly over-represented."
In response to a request by a university data access center, which sought records about the use of electronic monitoring on illegal immigrants, ICE said it did not have any records of the individuals who were released.
"Lankford noted that he was worried that the data about the released immigrants might have been submitted by the Department of Justice to either special masters or judges who are involved in reviewing the effectiveness of the program. He said that this could lead to misleading court filings."
In December, US Customs and Border Protection reported that it encountered more than 250,000 illegal immigrants. This was the agency's highest monthly figure for this type of encounter. During the previous fiscal year, it encountered over 2.3 million migrants.
