According to a study conducted by Cygnal that was given confidentially to Breitbart News before it was made public, former President Donald Trump has a significant lead over the rest of the probable GOP primary field in 2024.
In the nationwide poll, which was conducted from October 10 to 12, 1,204 potential GOP primary voters with a margin of error of 2.82 percent were questioned. It discovered that Trump had a nearly majority of the vote (45%), leading the potential field. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who trailed Trump by nearly 20 percent and finished in last place with 26 percent, was his closest rival.
Former Vice President Mike Pence follows with 9 percent, followed by former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley with 3 percent. Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) also receives a favorable rating of 3%, but it is by far the lowest of any Republican in the poll, with 60 percent of Republicans holding a negative opinion of her, including 45 percent who hold a very negative opinion.
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) follows with a 2% rating. With 0.9 percent each, Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Maryland Governor Larry Hogan are followed by Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) with 0.8 percent, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo with 0.7 percent, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie with 0.4 percent, Sens. Rick Scott (R-FL) and Tim Scott (R-SC) with 0.3 percent, and South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem with 0.3 percent. Gov. Glenn Youngkin of Virginia, Gov. Chris Sununu of New Hampshire, Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX), Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO), and Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) each receive 0.2 percent, while Sen. Josh Hawley receives 0.1 percent. Asa Hutchinson, the governor of Arkansas, receives 0% of the vote, and 6% are undecided.
DeSantis gets the lead over the competition in 2024 if Trump decides not to run, but he does not capture all or even the majority of Trump's 45 percent. In a field without Trump, DeSantis increases by 20 points from 26 to 46 percent, taking only 20 percent of Trump's 45 percent, with the remaining 40 percent being distributed among the remaining candidates. Pence rises to 17 percent in a field without Trump, while Cruz and Haley both receive 4 percent. In that scenario, Rubio, Abbott, and Pompeo all receive 2 percent, while Cheney remains at 3 percent. Each of Christie and Hogan receives one percent, while the others continue to have marginal support of less than one percent.
The cost of living and inflation are by far the most important issues for GOP primary voters in 2024. In terms of importance to those surveyed, it outranks the next issue—illegal immigration, at 17 percent—by a wide margin, at 44 percent. The economy and jobs come in second at 15%, followed by government expenditure and the deficit at 18%, and national security at 6%. The top issue, according to 5 percent of respondents, was crime and public safety, followed by healthcare (4 percent), the Second Amendment (1 percent), and 2 percent who were undecided.
