Russia’s economy is not as strong as Vladimir Putin wants the world to believe. The numbers show his war machine is running out of steam after three years of burning through cash to fight Ukraine. Putin has been lying to his people about how well Russia is doing while his country slides toward recession.
For two years, Russia’s economy grew because Putin spent everything on tanks and missiles. Military factories worked overtime and soldiers got big paychecks before heading to war. This fake boom made Russia’s economy grow 4 percent in 2023 and 2024, but it was all borrowed time.
Now the truth is coming out and it’s ugly. Russia’s growth dropped to just 1.4 percent in early 2025 and will hit near zero by year’s end. Their own central bank admits the country is headed for recession. Even Putin’s economy minister said Russia is “on the brink” before Putin told him to shut up.
Putin’s government is broke and getting broker every month. Russia’s budget deficit exploded to $56 billion, up 30 percent from their target. They’re spending 40 percent of their budget on war while their people suffer from rising prices and shortages.
Oil money used to save Putin, but not anymore. Oil and gas revenue crashed 27 percent in July as smart American sanctions finally bite. Europe is done buying Putin’s blood oil, and his shadow fleet of tankers can’t hide from our Navy and allies.
Russian families are feeling the pain Putin tries to hide. Prices are skyrocketing and 58 percent of Russians say inflation is their biggest worry, not the war. Unemployment will jump from 2.9 percent to 3.5 percent as Putin’s war economy hits a wall.
This economic collapse shows why Putin desperately wants peace talks with President Trump. Putin knows he can’t keep funding his war machine much longer without his economy falling apart completely. His military gains mean nothing if his country goes bankrupt.
America’s sanctions are working exactly as planned, proving our economic power crushes dictators who threaten freedom. Putin thought he could outlast the West, but our patient strategy is breaking his regime from the inside. This is what happens when you mess with America and our allies.
