Portland has once again been the scene of chaos masquerading as protest, with radical elements blocking streets and converging on the ICE facility where federal officers were forced to respond to violent attempts to breach the building. Videos and on-the-ground reporting show tear gas and flash-bangs used after demonstrators tried to force entry, turning what should have been lawful opposition into a lawless mob action.
When the White House moved to authorize the deployment of National Guard personnel to protect critical federal facilities and immigration enforcement officers, it was a plain statement of basic responsibility: protect lives and property when mobs try to take the law into their own hands. President Trump’s order to send forces to Oregon and to provide troops for 60 days was a response to these clear threats and the growing unwillingness of local officials to keep order.
Predictably, Oregon’s leftist leadership reacted with lawsuits and political posturing instead of gratitude for help, filing litigation to block the Guard and publicly insisting they never asked for federal intervention. This reflexive obstructionism risks turning commonsense public safety measures into partisan football while emboldening the very street thugs who celebrate chaos.
Local officials in Portland who wave off assistance and lecture the rest of the country on civil liberties should answer for the nights when federal officers had to repel attacks and when businesses and commuters were shut down by radicals. Their refusal to acknowledge the problem has forced federal action and made clear who truly governs in parts of that city: lawlessness, not elected leaders.
Americans who love their country should be grateful the Guard and federal officers stand ready to defend institutions that keep our communities safe, not condemn them for doing the hard work local politicians ducked. If conservatives don’t loudly defend the rule of law and back the men and women in uniform, we cede the streets to hoodlums and anarchists who want to tear this country apart.
It’s time for patriots to demand more than virtue-signaling from coastal elites: insist on consequences for violent protesters, full support for law enforcement and immigration officers, and a return to common-sense governance that prioritizes safety over spectacle. The choice is stark — order or anarchy — and decent Americans should choose courage, security, and the Constitution every single time.
