During a trip to El Paso, Texas over the weekend, Mayor Eric Adams of New York City said that his city has no room for illegal immigrants.
During a press conference in El Paso, Adams refuted claims that New York City is a safe and welcoming place for illegal immigrants. He noted that there is a misconception about the city’s ability to provide jobs and housing for those who come here illegally. In the past, the mayor criticized the actions of Colorado Governor Jared Polis, Texas Governor Greg Abbott, and El Paso Mayor Oscar Leeser.
“Some of the organizations operating in the city are providing inaccurate information to the public about the situation in New York City, according to the mayor. He noted that the city has no more room for people who are in the country illegally. The mayor criticized the lack of coordination between the national government and local NGOs.”
According to the New York Daily News, some of Adams’ shelters have been turning away people who are looking for housing due to the lack of space.
Over the past couple of weeks, El Paso, Texas, has been the focus of national attention after hundreds of migrants entered the city and some were sleeping on the streets. US President Joe Biden and a bipartisan delegation visited the area to assess the situation.

In the last week and a half, New York City has received over 3,000 illegal immigrants.
In response to the growing number of immigrants in the city, Adams called on the national government to address the issue in a more effective way. He noted that over 25,000 individuals are currently in the city’s care.
