A Republican-led House committee is turning up the heat on Columbia University over its handling of antisemitism on campus. Congressman Tim Walberg demanded the Ivy League school hand over disciplinary records for protesters involved in anti-Jewish incidents. The move comes after months of chaos that left Jewish students fearing for their safety.
Columbia has repeatedly failed to protect Jewish students despite taking billions in taxpayer money, lawmakers say. Recent protests saw mobs storm buildings, disrupt classes, and spread hateful messages about Israel. In one shocking case, activists barged into an Israeli professor’s lecture and handed out flyers calling for violence against Jews.
The university claims it’s cracking down on rule-breakers. But records show most students who occupied campus buildings last spring faced no serious punishment. Critics argue Columbia cares more about pleasing far-left activists than enforcing order. “Their negligence created a hostile environment,” Walberg said, slamming school leaders for breaking promises to Congress.
This isn’t the first time Columbia has ignored antisemitism. Under previous president Minouche Shafik, the campus became a breeding ground for anti-Israel extremism. While Shafik resigned last year, the new interim president hasn’t fixed the problem. Protest groups like CUAD still vandalize property and push pro-Hamas rhetoric without consequences.
The Trump administration is watching closely. Since returning to office, President Trump has vowed to strip funding from colleges that tolerate Jew-hatred. Columbia now faces a federal civil rights investigation – one of five schools targeted for allowing antisemitism to fester. Taxpayers shouldn’t fund campuses that harbor hate, conservatives argue.
Walberg gave Columbia until February 27 to hand over documents about 11 antisemitic incidents. If the school refuses, it could lose federal support – a major blow to its budget. “Enough is enough,” said one parent whose child transferred out due to safety fears. “Universities must choose: educate students or enable mobs.”
While Columbia claims it’s cooperating, many doubt real change will come. Past committees exposed how administrators let radicals run wild. Until expulsions replace empty warnings, Jewish students will keep suffering. “Columbia waved the white flag,” said former committee chair Virginia Foxx. “They surrendered to lawlessness.”
The battle highlights a growing divide between common-sense Americans and woke colleges. As elections near, expect more Republicans to challenge schools poisoning young minds with anti-Israel lies. For families paying sky-high tuition, it’s about time someone held these campuses accountable.
