The crash scene was gruesome and terrifying. A minivan carrying young Sawyer Whitt and his mother slammed into a semi at 70 miles per hour. Van Orden could see the boy’s leg bones through his torn flesh and blood pouring from his wrist.
Without hesitation, Van Orden grabbed socks from his suitcase and made life-saving tourniquets. His Navy SEAL medical training kicked in as he worked to stop the bleeding. This is exactly why we need more veterans in Congress who know how to act under pressure.
But here’s the beautiful part that makes every patriot proud. Regular Americans jumped in to help too. A local farmer used a windshield wiper as a splint while others brought tools and supplies. This is the America our founding fathers envisioned.
The teamwork saved Sawyer’s life. The boy was airlifted to a Des Moines hospital where he’s recovering from his injuries. Van Orden even visited him in the hospital on Monday, showing the heart of a true leader.
This story proves everything conservatives believe about American character. When crisis strikes, we don’t wait for government to save us. We roll up our sleeves and do what’s right, just like our ancestors did.
