House Republicans are pushing hard to stop judges who block President Trump’s policies. They say these judges are abusing their power and need to be reined in. Jim Jordan, a top GOP leader, says Congress should consider every option, including impeachment, to hold them accountable.
Some Republicans want to copy what Thomas Jefferson did. Back then, Congress simply eliminated judgeships they didn’t like. Ron DeSantis, Florida’s governor, says today’s judges shouldn’t have power over immigration if they keep ruling against Trump. He believes Congress can take away their authority without firing them.
A new bill called the No Rogue Rulings Act would stop judges from making nationwide decisions. This bill, led by California Rep. Darrell Issa, would limit judges to ruling only on the specific cases in front of them. Republicans say this will prevent liberal judges from blocking Trump’s policies for the whole country.
President Trump has called for judges like James Boasberg to be impeached. Boasberg recently halted deportation flights of suspected gang members, angering Trump and his supporters. But impeachment is a long shot. Democrats control the Senate, and removing a judge requires a two-thirds vote most experts say won’t happen.
Instead of impeachment, Republicans are looking at other ways to clip judges’ wings. They want to stop “judge shopping,” where activists file cases in friendly courts. They’re also pushing bills to limit how far a judge’s order can reach. Even some Trump allies admit impeachment might not work but say these other steps could.
Jim Jordan plans to hold hearings soon to expose what he calls “judicial overreach.” He’ll bring in experts to argue that judges are ignoring the law to resist Trump. Jordan says the House must act fast because these rulings are hurting the president’s agenda on immigration and other key issues.
Not all Republicans agree on impeaching judges. Some worry it’s too extreme and distracts from passing laws. They’d rather focus on changing court rules to limit liberal judges. But Trump’s base is fired up, and many GOP lawmakers feel pressure to show they’re fighting back against the “resistance” in robes.
Chief Justice John Roberts warned that impeaching judges over political disagreements is dangerous. He says judges must be free to rule without fear of Congress punishing them. But Republicans argue the real danger is judges acting like politicians instead of unbiased referees. This battle over judges is likely to get even hotter as Trump’s policies face more legal challenges.
