Washington Republicans have finally done what Minnesotans and whistleblowers have been demanding: they’ve called Gov. Tim Walz and Attorney General Keith Ellison to testify about what looks like systemic theft of taxpayer dollars under Democrat supervision. This isn’t partisan theater — it’s an attempt to get straight answers about how billions vanished from programs meant to feed and care for the vulnerable.
The Oversight Committee has scheduled a two-part review, starting with state officials next week and bringing Walz and Ellison before Congress on February 10 to answer pointed questions about oversight failures. Americans deserve more than press releases and blame-shifting; they deserve sworn testimony under oath and a transparent accounting of the money that disappeared.
What investigators are peeling back is jaw-dropping: alleged fraud in Feeding Our Future and other social programs that federal prosecutors say may amount to the largest COVID-era fraud scheme in the nation, with disturbing reports that some funds were even routed overseas. If even a fraction of these allegations are true, the scandal is not just corruption — it is a moral outrage against hardworking taxpayers.
Insiders and department employees have told Congress they sounded alarms for years and were stonewalled or retaliated against when they pushed for action, while the governor’s office reportedly failed to act decisively. Committee Chairman James Comer and other Republicans are rightly pursuing subpoenas and have hinted at criminal referrals if evidence supports it — accountability must be more than a headline.
Fox News contributor Jason Chaffetz, joining Fox & Friends, put it plainly: Minnesotans and the rest of the country deserve clear answers about who knew what and when, and why state leaders didn’t stop the bleeding sooner. He also used the moment to note that conservatives like Sen. Ted Cruz pushing national NIL rules are trying to fix real-world policy problems while Democrats deflect when their own house is burning down.
This is about consequences, not partisan scorekeeping. With federal and Treasury probes underway and prosecutors already charging bad actors, Congress must follow the money, refer proven crimes for prosecution, and pass reforms to close the yawning holes that allowed this theft to happen on such a massive scale.
Hardworking Americans are tired of watching their tax dollars vanish while politicians propose soundbites instead of safeguards. Republicans in Congress should seize this moment to demand truth, install stronger oversight, and make sure those responsible — at whatever level — pay the price. The era of turning a blind eye to Democrat mismanagement has to end, and these hearings are the first step toward justice.
