Financial Abuse: A Hidden Crisis Destroying Families and Our Economy

Financial abuse is destroying American families and our economy. At the recent Forbes Power Women’s Summit, experts revealed shocking facts about this hidden crime that affects nearly every domestic violence case. This isn’t just about bruises you can see. It’s about controlling money to trap victims in dangerous relationships.

The numbers tell a disturbing story that every American should know. Financial abuse happens in 99 percent of domestic violence cases according to multiple studies. Abusers steal money, destroy credit, and sabotage jobs to keep their victims dependent. They know that without money, their victims can’t escape.

This economic terrorism costs our nation dearly. Victims lose 8 million work days every year because of financial abuse. The total cost to workplace productivity reaches 1.3 trillion dollars. That’s money stolen from hardworking Americans and productive businesses across our great country.

The tactics these predators use are as cruel as they are calculated. They steal paychecks, max out credit cards, and prevent their victims from working. Some destroy property or refuse to pay basic bills like rent and utilities. Others hide assets or take out loans in their victim’s name without permission.

Women trying to escape these situations face impossible choices. Many return to their abusers because they have no money for housing or food. Some become homeless with their children rather than stay in dangerous homes. The average survivor loses over 53,000 dollars in wages over their lifetime.

Law enforcement and our courts must take financial abuse as seriously as physical violence. Too often, police treat money problems as civil matters instead of criminal acts. Judges need better training to recognize these patterns of control and manipulation. Prosecutors should pursue these cases with the same vigor they show for other violent crimes.

Strong families built on respect and shared responsibility are America’s foundation. Real men protect and provide for their families instead of controlling and destroying them. Financial abuse represents everything that’s wrong with people who abandon traditional values of honor and responsibility. These cowards deserve the full weight of our justice system.

Every American has a role in fighting this epidemic that threatens our communities. We must teach our children about healthy relationships and financial responsibility. Churches, schools, and community groups should offer resources and support to victims. Together, we can restore the values that make families and our nation strong.
