Federal Forces Step In: Minneapolis Faces Lawlessness Amid Sanctuary Policies

Tom Homan’s blunt message on Carl Higbie’s FRONTLINE should wake up every American who cares about law and order: the federal government is increasing ICE operations in Minneapolis to restore safety where local leaders have failed. For months the city’s sanctuary policies have invited chaos, and the Department of Homeland Security has confirmed it is sending hundreds more officers to the area to conduct the largest enforcement operation in recent memory. Conservative patriots should cheer that federal authorities are finally taking the threat to our streets seriously.

This stepped-up enforcement comes amid the tragic death of Renee Good, who was shot during a confrontation with federal officers on January 7, 2026, an incident that has inflamed passions on both sides of the debate. Videos and eyewitness accounts have been shared widely, and Minneapolis and federal authorities are conducting multiple investigations into what happened that day. Americans should demand both a thorough investigation and respect for the rule of law while we wait for the facts to come out.

Left-wing politicians and noisy activists have predictably jumped into outrage mode, calling for ICE to leave and vilifying the agents carrying out federal law enforcement missions. Their reflexive politicization of every enforcement action only encourages lawlessness and puts ordinary citizens at risk; Minneapolis leaders who oppose enforcement have a responsibility to answer for the rising disorder in their city. The contrast between chaotic local governance and decisive federal action could not be clearer to any thinking voter.

Border czar Tom Homan and other federal officials have defended agents’ conduct while promising accountability through proper investigations, and DHS officials say thousands of arrests have been part of the broader effort to remove dangerous criminal aliens. It’s no surprise that people on the left call for defunding and restraint when the results of enforcement are actually arrests of violent offenders and public-safety gains. Conservatives know that enforcing immigration law is about protecting American communities first and foremost.

Let’s not pretend sanctuary policies don’t have real consequences: illegal labor suppresses wages and undercuts hardworking Americans, and aggressive enforcement is needed to protect jobs and public safety. Tom Homan has repeatedly underscored the economic and security rationales for stepped-up worksite and criminal-enforcement operations, and those common-sense priorities are what voters should demand from their elected officials. If Minneapolis wants peace and prosperity it must stop sheltering the problem and start cooperating with lawful removal of dangerous individuals.

That said, conservatives also demand a fair, transparent investigation into Renee Good’s death so the public can see the facts and the law can be applied correctly. Multiple inquiries are underway, and families and communities deserve answers — but answers should not be hijacked into political theater that shields criminals or undermines the men and women who risk their lives to keep us safe. Americans of every political stripe should insist on both accountability and support for law enforcement, not opportunistic grandstanding.

Now is the time for voters to back leaders who put the safety of citizens above ideology, who will support federal enforcement where local officials refuse to, and who will rebuild trust by delivering results. Minneapolis is a test case for whether our nation will stand for law, order, and the common-sense enforcement of immigration laws that protect neighborhoods and wages. Justice is coming to Minneapolis because the American people will not stand idle while vocal radicals try to dismantle the rule of law.
