Comey’s Seashell Post Sparks Outrage: A Coded Threat to Trump?

James Comey’s “8647” seashell post sparked widespread outrage as a possible coded threat against President Trump, with critics arguing his defense of ignorance is implausible given his background. The former FBI director claimed he didn’t realize “86” could mean assassination, but his critics — including top officials — say no one with his experience could miss the violent implication.

Comey posted a photo of seashells arranged as “8647” on Instagram, which many interpreted as calling to “86” (slang for eliminate) the 47th president. Tulsi Gabbard, Director of National Intelligence, called it a “public call to assassinate” Trump and demanded Comey face prison. President Trump accused Comey of intentional malice, stating: “A child knows what that meant. If you’re the FBI director and you don’t know… that meant assassination”.

1. : As former FBI director, Comey would know “86” is common criminal jargon for killing someone.
2. : The post came amid heightened tensions between Comey and Trump, whom he investigated and frequently criticizes.
3. : Critics note Comey’s history of controversial public statements targeting Trump since being fired in 2017.

Tulsi Gabbard’s declaration that “I don’t give him a break” reflects the conservative view that Comey’s actions represent against a sitting president. While Comey claims he meant no violence, his refusal to clarify the message’s intent — combined with his past role manipulating public perception — fuels suspicions of deliberate provocation. The Secret Service has reportedly been alerted, though no formal charges have been filed.
