A horrific shooting rocked a Catholic school in Minneapolis today, leaving two people dead and more than a dozen injured. The attack happened during morning drop-off at Annunciation Catholic School, where innocent children were just starting their school day. At least five young kids were rushed to the hospital with serious injuries.
The shooter is now dead from what police believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Parents heard dozens of gunshots ring out for several terrifying minutes while their children were at school. This madman targeted a house of God and a place where our most vulnerable citizens should feel safe.
Governor Tim Walz called the attack horrific, and President Trump was quickly briefed on the situation. The FBI and other federal agencies rushed to the scene to help local police. At least the shooter can never hurt anyone again, but the damage is already done to these precious families.
This attack on a Christian school shows how our religious communities are under siege in America today. Faithful families send their children to Catholic schools to escape the chaos and violence plaguing our public schools. Now even these sacred spaces are not safe from evil.
We need to face the hard truth that our society is broken when killers target children at prayer. The breakdown of traditional values and the attack on Christianity in America creates the conditions for this kind of evil. Our kids deserve better than living in fear at school.
Law-abiding citizens need the right to protect themselves and their families. Gun-free zones like schools just create soft targets for criminals who ignore the law anyway. We must allow trained security and teachers to carry weapons to defend our children.
Mental health is clearly a crisis in our nation when people snap and commit these unspeakable acts. Instead of blaming guns, we should focus on identifying and treating dangerous individuals before they hurt innocent people. Early intervention could save lives.
Our prayers go out to the victims and their families during this terrible time. The community of Annunciation Catholic School will need our support to heal from this tragedy. We must stand with our Christian brothers and sisters and never let evil win.
