South Bronx residents are up in arms over a new 2,200-bed migrant shelter for single men opening in their neighborhood. Locals say the city didn’t listen to their concerns and dumped another problem on a community already struggling with too many shelters. Protests have rocked the streets as folks worry about safety and resources being taken from those who’ve lived here for years.
The shelter, set up in a giant warehouse near Bruckner Boulevard, started moving in migrants this week. Many came from other shelters closing across the city. Security measures like guards and metal detectors are in place, but residents aren’t convinced. They point to nearby schools and homes, asking who’ll keep their families safe when thousands of strangers move in next door.
Local leaders like Bishop Boyde Singletary say the Bronx gets treated like a second-class borough. “They never asked us,” he told crowds at a rally. Pastors and parents compared this fight to past wins against bad businesses in the area. They beat a porn shop years ago by standing together—now they’re fighting City Hall again.
Politicians are split. Democrats like Mayor Adams claim the shelter is temporary and saves taxpayer money. But even some in his own party, like Congressman Ritchie Torres, blast the plan. “Why always the Bronx?” Torres asked. Republicans see a chance to rally, with groups like the Young Republicans Club joining protests. They argue citizens should come first, especially after a fire displaced over 250 locals last month.
Taxpayers are footing a huge bill. Fixing up the building cost up to $340,000, adding to the billions spent on migrants since 2022. Critics say that money could’ve helped struggling New Yorkers instead. One teacher at the protest fumed about waiting years for a work permit while migrants get fast-tracked help.
The city promises the shelter will close once the migrant crisis eases. But locals don’t buy it. “Temporary means forever here,” said a mom pushing her baby in a stroller. With more protests planned, the Bronx isn’t backing down. As one sign put it: “Red Wave > Migrant Wave.”
