Brave Texas Deputies Risk Lives to Stop Wrong-Way Drunk Driver

Two Harris County deputies showed true bravery this week. They risked their lives to stop a drunk driver going the wrong way on a busy highway. Their quick thinking saved innocent people from harm. This is what real heroism looks like.

Deputies Joshua Blair and Louie Ayala got a call about a wrong-way driver around 1:30 AM Tuesday. The driver was on East Freeway near Houston, going east in the westbound lanes. The deputies didn’t hesitate. They drove straight toward danger to protect others.

The deputies used their patrol car to block the drunk driver’s path. They crashed head-on into Nathan Arevalo’s vehicle on purpose. This stopped him from hitting regular families driving home. Both deputies were hurt but walked away with minor injuries. That’s the kind of sacrifice good officers make every day.

Arevalo was drunk and could have killed someone. Tests showed he was over the legal limit. He’s been charged with driving while intoxicated. This isn’t his first mistake – it’s time we get tough on repeat offenders. Soft laws let these dangers stay on the road.

Last year, a wrong-way crash on Eastex Freeway killed a mother and hurt two kids. This time was different because brave deputies acted. Imagine if more officers had this kind of backup instead of being second-guessed.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said, “Our deputies put their lives on the line to prevent a tragedy.” Sergeant Bondurant called it a “miracle” no one died. These men deserve medals, not defunding. They prove police are society’s first line of defense.

Some folks want to cut police budgets and coddle criminals. This story shows why that’s wrong. Strong law enforcement stops chaos. Drunk drivers belong behind bars, not back on the streets with slap-on-the-wrist sentences.

Supporting our police means supporting safe communities. These deputies did their job well. It’s time we honor them by cracking down on lawbreakers and backing the blue. Heroes like Blair and Ayala make Texas proud.
