Another innocent life has been stolen by America’s broken justice system. Iryna Zarutska came to this country from war-torn Ukraine seeking safety and the American dream. Instead, she found death at the hands of a career criminal who should have been behind bars.
The 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee was brutally stabbed to death on a Charlotte light rail train in August. Security footage shows the horrific attack was completely random and unprovoked. Decarlos Brown Jr. simply pulled out a knife and stabbed this innocent young woman three times in the neck and hand.
This was not some tragic accident or crime of passion. Brown is a repeat violent offender with a long criminal history. He never should have been walking free that night to terrorize innocent passengers on public transportation.
The surveillance video is stomach-churning to watch. Zarutska was just sitting on the train, probably heading home from work or school. She had no idea a dangerous predator was sitting right behind her, ready to strike.
This murder was completely preventable if our justice system actually worked. Instead of keeping violent criminals locked up where they belong, liberal prosecutors and judges keep releasing them back onto our streets. They care more about the rights of criminals than protecting innocent people.
Attorney General Pam Bondi is finally taking action by bringing federal charges that could put this monster away for life. She correctly called this murder a direct result of failed soft-on-crime policies that put criminals before law-abiding citizens.
President Trump and his team are rightfully pointing out how Democratic-run cities are failing to protect their residents. When career criminals like Brown are allowed to roam free, tragedies like this become inevitable.
Iryna Zarutska deserved better from America. Every hardworking American deserves to ride public transportation without fear of being murdered by repeat offenders. It is time to put criminals behind bars and keep them there.
