Antifa Anarchy: Berkeley Brawl Targets Free Speech Event

A coordinated pack of left-wing agitators tried to shut down Turning Point USA’s campus event in Berkeley, sparking a violent brawl on Bancroft Way and forcing police to make multiple arrests as attendees were corralled behind barricades. Videos from the scene show masked radicals surrounding exits, hurling taunts and grabbing at students — the kind of intimidation that used to be confined to run-down protest videos and now plays out in front of America’s future leaders.

Law enforcement and campus security were out in force, but even a heavy police presence couldn’t prevent scuffles or stop a group earlier in the day from being taken into custody after trying to hang a cardboard prop on campus gates. Berkeley officials had warned the campus would be prepared, yet the scenes — pepper spray, officers in helmets, and people bleeding on the sidewalk — made clear that preparation without accountability is useless.

Turning Point’s own spokesman, Andrew Kolvet, blasted the attackers on social media, calling them antifa agitators and demanding that whatever laws or policies are necessary be used to stop this brand of political violence from metastasizing on campuses. That TPUSA leaders had to publicly plead for basic safety instead of trusting universities to protect students is a national disgrace and a wake-up call for anyone who still believes our campuses are neutral bastions of free speech.

The outrage reached the Department of Justice, which announced an inquiry into what happened and whether UC Berkeley failed to prevent outside agitators from turning a speech into a brawl — a rare but necessary federal spotlight on campus lawlessness. If federal investigators find the university tolerated or enabled this chaos, there must be consequences, and those who cheered on violence should face the full force of the law, not sympathetic op-eds or students’ unions defending thuggery.

This episode is yet another damning example of how universities have become incubators for performative rage rather than forums for debate; administrators talk about “diversity of thought” while allowing mobs to wage organized assaults on opposing viewpoints. Real freedom-loving Americans should demand that campuses stop protecting rioters and start protecting the right of peaceful citizens to gather and speak without fear of being assaulted or ostracized.

Despite the intimidation and the chaos outside, TPUSA’s program went on and conservative students stood their ground, proving the movement Charlie Kirk built is not going anywhere — it’s growing stronger under pressure. That resilience should be applauded, and it should also be a clarion call: cities, campuses, and the Justice Department must work together to stop the left’s violent playbook and restore law, order, and free speech to American life.
