US to Halt Immigrant Visas for 75 Nations, Prioritizing American Taxpayers

The State Department announced this week that the United States will pause immigrant visa processing for citizens of 75 countries, a sweeping move that takes effect January 21, 2026. This is not a random stunt; it is a direct, lawful action intended to stop people likely to rely on taxpayer-funded benefits from entering as immigrants while the government reassesses procedures.

Officials say the freeze targets applicants judged likely to become a “public charge,” meaning those who would turn to welfare and public assistance rather than support themselves. This is common-sense governance: if someone plans to come here to game our safety net, the American people have the right to demand better vetting and accountability.

The list of affected nations includes countries ranging from Afghanistan, Iran and Russia to Brazil, Nigeria, Thailand and many more, spanning fragile states and long-standing trouble spots alike. The policy focuses on immigrant visas — permanent residency pathways — not the day-to-day travel of tourists or business visitors, although consular officers will now apply tougher financial and language screening.

Patriots should welcome a government that finally puts American workers and taxpayers first instead of treating our generosity as an open invitation to be exploited. For years the left burnedish talk about compassion while ignoring the consequences: overwhelmed local services, crowded classrooms, and stretched hospitals paid for by hard-working Americans. It is time to prioritize national sovereignty and the safety net for citizens who earned it.

Predictably, the usual suspects on the left are howling about humanitarian harm and diplomatic fallout, but we can care about human dignity and also insist on merit, self-sufficiency, and lawful admission. Even studies cited by critics have shown that immigrants do not necessarily use more welfare on a per-capita basis than native-born Americans, which proves the debate is about how to admit the right people, not whether we should protect the American people.

This administration is taking bold, necessary steps to restore order to an immigration system that has been abused for decades. Congress should applaud and strengthen these measures by passing real reforms: merit-based admissions, stronger verification of finances and sponsorship, and clear priority for Americans and lawful residents. The choice is plain — defend the American worker and taxpayer, or keep letting Washington turn our generosity into someone else’s entitlement.
