House Democrats have dusted off the impeachment playbook and formally targeted Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, led by Rep. Robin Kelly’s announcement this month. The move is being sold as a response to a series of federal enforcement actions, but make no mistake — this is political theater dressed up as accountability.
The articles being floated accuse Secretary Noem of obstruction of Congress, violation of the public trust, and self-dealing — sweeping charges intended to inflame headlines more than to prove a legal case. Democrats are pointing to specific instances at DHS and alleging misuse of taxpayer money and interference with oversight as their grounds.
What lit the match was the tragic shooting in Minneapolis that left Renee Nicole Good dead after an encounter with an ICE officer, a chaotic episode that Democrats have seized on to demand political retribution. The grief and outrage of the moment are being weaponized into a partisan cudgel instead of being treated as a call for a calm, thorough investigation.
The impeachment effort has attracted dozens of Democratic co-sponsors — reports put the number in the dozens as House progressives rally to make a statement to their base. That raw headcount is being paraded as proof of mainstream outrage, but quantity alone does not equal legitimacy.
Even many Democrats privately grumble about jumping straight to impeachment without a full investigation, and Republicans control the House, meaning this stunt is unlikely to go anywhere beyond the headlines. House GOP leaders have largely treated these resolutions as symbolic, and with a Republican majority the notion of conviction is laughably remote.
Let’s be blunt: the left’s reflex to politicize every crisis is corrosive. Democrats would rather tear down a secretary who has been tasked with securing the border than work with Republicans to fix the real failures of our immigration and detention systems, and they happily use a death as cover for a political campaign.
Hardworking Americans deserve more than televised outrage and partisan show trials. If there are legitimate abuses to investigate — and any credible evidence of wrongdoing should be pursued — Congress should hold real oversight hearings, secure sworn testimony, and follow the facts instead of staging another impeachment circus. Republicans in power should call out the hypocrisy, protect due process, and demand the serious, sober investigations the country needs rather than letting Democrats score points in next year’s primaries.
