Another horrific tragedy has struck America’s children, this time in Minneapolis where an evil gunman murdered two innocent kids at their Catholic school. On August 27th, a shooter fired dozens of rounds through church windows during morning mass at Annunciation Catholic Church. Eight-year-old and ten-year-old children were killed in cold blood while 18 others were wounded in this senseless attack.
The killer, Robin Westman, planned this evil act by barricading exit doors from the outside before opening fire on defenseless children and families. This monster fired over 100 rounds from multiple weapons including a rifle, shotgun, and pistol during what should have been a peaceful start to the school year. The gunfire lasted two terrifying minutes before the coward took his own life in the parking lot.
What makes this even more heartbreaking is that these precious children were simply attending their first week of school mass. They should have been laughing in hallways and playing with friends instead of running for their lives from a madman. These families sent their kids to a Catholic school thinking they would be safe from the violence plaguing our streets.
The shooter worked at a marijuana dispensary earlier this year, another reminder that our culture’s embrace of drug normalization has consequences. Former classmates say Westman showed disturbing warning signs going back to grade school, including writing in code and displaying odd obsessions. Once again, the red flags were there but our broken system failed to act.
This attack happened at a church and school that has served the community for over 100 years. Hardworking Catholic families chose this school to give their children a moral education grounded in faith and values. Now their sanctuary has been desecrated by unspeakable evil that targeted the most innocent among us.
While politicians will rush to blame guns, the real problem is a sick culture that has abandoned God and traditional values. We have raised a generation without proper moral foundations, and this is the tragic result. Our children are paying the price for society’s moral decay and rejection of faith-based guidance.
The heroes in this story are the first responders who rushed toward danger and the neighbors who helped wounded children. One man held the hand of a little girl who had been shot in the head, showing the compassion and courage that still exists in America. These are the values we need to celebrate and protect.
