Another day, another senseless act of violence that rocks our military to its core. Army Sergeant Quornelius Radford opened fire on five of his fellow soldiers at Fort Stewart, Georgia on Wednesday morning. This 28-year-old soldier turned his personal handgun on his own brothers in arms at their workplace.
Thank God for the brave heroes who stepped up when it mattered most. Fellow soldiers immediately tackled this coward and stopped him from hurting more people. Without their quick thinking and courage, we could have seen a much worse tragedy unfold.
All five victims are alive and expected to recover, which is a blessing. Three soldiers needed surgery, and two were rushed to a trauma center in Savannah. These wounded warriors deserve our prayers and support as they heal from this awful attack.
The shooting happened at 10:56 AM and the suspect was caught just 39 minutes later. Fort Stewart went on lockdown, but military leaders quickly got control of the situation. This shows our military knows how to respond to threats, even when they come from within.
What we need to know now is why this happened. Radford had never been deployed to combat, so this wasn’t about war trauma. He was shooting at his own coworkers, people he worked with every day. Something is seriously wrong here.
Our military bases should be the safest places in America. We trust these men and women to protect our nation, but who protects them from threats inside their own ranks. This incident raises tough questions about how we screen our soldiers and support their mental health.
The Army Criminal Investigation Division is now handling this case. They need to get to the bottom of what drove this soldier to betray his oath and attack his fellow Americans. Justice must be swift and complete.
This tragedy reminds us that our military families face dangers we never think about. We owe it to every soldier to make sure they feel safe on their own bases. Our heroes deserve nothing less than our full support and protection.
