The US military took down a spy balloon that was seen hovering over the U.S. for a couple of days after it was detected. The Pentagon was monitoring the balloon as it flew over the Carolinas before it eventually reached the Atlantic Ocean. Several recovery vessels were also spotted in the area.
According to Lloyd Austin, the Secretary of Defense, Biden ordered the Pentagon's to take down the suspected spy balloon, which was allegedly gathering intelligence on US strategic sites.

According to reports, Biden wanted the balloon to be brought down earlier, but military officials advised against it, as the falling debris could hit civilians below.
The Chinese government reportedly responded after the balloon was shot down.
"The Chinese government criticized the US' response, saying it was an excessive reaction that violated international conventions. China vowed to defend the interests of the companies involved."
China claimed that it was the owner of the balloon, but it noted that it malfunctioned and was accidentally blown off course.
