A Brooklyn Law School professor said that law enforcers do not need to stop motorists while speaking about the death of Tyre Nichols, who was shot by police.
"According to Alexis Hoag-Fordjour, law enforcers do not need to pull over motorists for minor traffic violations. She made the statement during an interview on "CBS This Morning."
Five former officers of the Memphis Police Department were charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of Nichols, who was killed following a traffic stop on January 7. The incident sparked protests across the country.
"According to Hoag-Fordjour, the incident highlighted the failure of body-worn cameras to prevent police officers from engaging in unlawful conduct. The officers were aware that they were being recorded, and they continued to violate his constitutional rights even though he was not following their commands."
"She stated that the goal of reducing violence between police and the public should be to decrease the interaction between law enforcers and the people."
Two of the county sheriff's deputies involved in the incident are currently under investigation.
