Sam Brinton, the head of the Department of Energy's nuclear waste disposal division, was charged with felony theft after he was accused of stealing a woman's bag at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport in September.
In September, Brinton, who was working for the airport, was caught on camera stealing a woman's bag at the baggage claim area. According to a criminal complaint, security footage showed Brinton taking the bag from the carousel and then removing its tags before leaving the area.
According to the complaint, after taking the bag from the airport's carousel 7, Brinton was seen leaving the facility in a rideshare vehicle. Records from American Airlines also indicated that he did not check his bag when he traveled to the airport.
Brinton is an outspoken activist for LGBTQ rights. According to The Washington Examiner, he identifies as gender fluid. In 2018, he posted an Instagram photo of himself dressed as a drag queen character known as Sister Ray Dee O'Active. The group he was a part of was called the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.
The police were then able to interrogate Brinton on October 9 after security footage showed him taking the bag, which was allegedly taken by mistake. At first, he claimed that the bag was taken accidentally, but he later changed his story. Around two hours after the incident, Brinton called the complainant to apologize for his lies. According to the complaint, he admitted to taking the bag, but he claimed that he and his companions were not completely honest when they first took it. He also said that they did not know what to do after realizing that it wasn't theirs. The clothes that were inside the bag were found in the hotel room's drawers.
The contents of the bag, which were valued at over $2,000, were nowhere to be found in Brinton's hotel room. The woman's clothes were also not found in his room.
Brinton enjoys various forms of sexual and animal role-playing, including "pup-play." In 2017, a newspaper article about his activities was featured in the student newspaper of the Polytechnic Institute of Rensselaer. One of his sexual fantasies included tying up and eating a meal on a sexual partner while watching Star Trek.
According to court documents, the woman's bag was valued at over $2,300. The items in it included various clothes. Brinton could face up to five years in jail if he is found guilty of theft.
The Energy Department confirmed that Brinton is on administrative leave, and he is not currently performing his duties. When contacted by the Daily Caller News Foundation, Brinton did not respond to his request for comment. The airport police also did not respond to their requests for comment.
