According to the Chicago Sun-Times, six people were killed and at least 28 others were injured in shootings that took place in Chicago over the weekend. This comes as the rate of violent crime in the Windy City continues to rapidly grow.
According to the site, police data reveals that around one third of the weekend shootings occurred in two South Side police districts that had witnessed a decline in the number of shootings and murders but an increase in total crime over the last year. Teenagers accounted for seven of the city's victims of gun violence.
According to reports from the Chicago Sun-Times, one incident resulted in the death of a guy who was riding a scooter after he had been struck by a car. Two additional guys were murdered by gunfire outside of a Chinatown metro stop in a separate incident.
According to statistics provided by the Chicago Police Department, the number of reported shooting events in Chicago up until September 4 decreased by 18% as compared to 2021, although the total number of complaints regarding multiple violent offenses rose by 37%. The number of complaints regarding the theft of motor vehicles and burglaries has climbed by 64% and 28%, respectively, while the number of reports regarding robberies has increased by 18%.
According to ABC 7 Chicago, Democratic Mayor of Chicago Lori Lightfoot stated earlier this summer that she believed the city was making success in combating violent crime. Lightfoot was quoted as saying that she believed the city was experiencing improvement.
Lightfoot stated that “The biggest challenge I think that we face is we’ve got to make sure that these young people put down the guns, and we’ve got to make more progress on carjackings.”
The Chicago Police Department did not immediately react to the request for a comment that was made by the Daily Caller News Foundation.
