The other bookend of a combat that has lasted for nearly 21 years will take place on August 30th, marking the first anniversary of the evacuation of soldiers from Afghanistan.
Not only was this war the longest in United States history, but it was also one of the most taxing wars for the people who served in it. People would watch their fathers serve there, and then ten years later they would follow in their father's footsteps and serve on the same base. As a result of all of the destruction and damage that was caused in a single country, there was a significant amount of scars left over when we left. This frightening experience was not limited to our troops or the forces fighting on our side. Families and citizens all around Afghanistan have also been forced to pay a price for this conflict.
It was worthwhile to put up with an occupying force in the hopes of obtaining prosperity and being able to fully enjoy modern rules while retaining complete freedom. The idea was to provide women the right to an education so that they would not have to get married off to become the sixth wife of a goat herder who was 70 years old. Some were able to make their escape and accomplish their childhood ambition. However, some people discovered that they were drawn into the politics of the tribe, and they were never able to achieve that wonderful, beautiful freedom. They were not even given the opportunity to test out life in a new environment that featured guarded freedom, also known as freedom light.
During these 21 years, there were people who lost their lives while serving in the United States armed forces. It was a tragic yet fitting way to come to the conclusion of continuing US presence in the country, with the final suicide bomber killing 13 servicemembers. The way to get there was by having a suicide bomber kill themselves. Their passing was a terrible tragedy, and the location of their passing at the Kabul airport served as a stark illustration of how badly Biden had planned the withdrawal of American forces from Afghanistan.
A terrible decision was made to clean out before making any plans to begin evacuating people from Bagram before turning it over to the Afghan government. People were compelled to storm the Kabul airport as a result of this situation in the expectation of regaining the freedom they had gained by serving for the military or because they were Americans living abroad who desired to return home. They were aware that the Taliban would return, this time wielding an iron grip. Within a matter of days after Bagram was turned over to the Afghan government, the Afghan National Army had already disarmed and fled.
The individuals that we selected to take charge of the situation did not engage in any form of conflict. Those who had served on the military side of the house were aware of this fact. Anyone in a position to lead troops on the ground could see it as plain as the nose on their face. However, there was a discrepancy between that reality and the one that was being presented to individuals like retired General Lloyd Austin, and it gave the impression that we could quickly escape and get people out with no prior warning. It appeared to him as though someone had painted a picture of the ideal transition for him. A painting that was constructed using nothing but untruths and fabrications as its foundation.
The failure of President Biden to confess he had made a mistake and recall the soldiers, to remain a presence in the nation to ensure security, or even to send in a few hundred advisors, could have made a huge difference. At the same time, he led the people of Afghanistan away from the calm meadows we had promised them and straight into a meatgrinder, which resulted in the death of American soldiers.
Afghanistan has been totally retaken by the Taliban since then. As a result, the American people have fewer answers and less confidence in their President than at any time in history. Since he took office, he has been a failure as President in practically every conceivable way. His record speaks for itself.
Despite his protests about the sixth of January 2021, it was the country's last day of normalcy on that day. Since then, there has been a massive increase in the cost of living across the board due to factors such as inflation, a lack of job growth, rising gas prices, and generalized pricing increases. Everything from steaks and suits to haunted houses and heating oil has become more expensive as a direct result of Biden's policies. Now, that is going to be reflected in his legacy, and it will be the legacy that is the worst of any President to date.
