The leaders of churches are expected to exhibit humility. They are not expected to put their congregation members down, but rather to help lift them up. However, there are some church leaders who fall from grace with God and end up becoming preoccupied with their material goods.
And a pastor of a church has been forced to issue an apology since his congregation did not give him the expensive watch he had requested.
Preaching can be heard in Kansas at the Church at the Well from the man known as Pastor Carlton Funderburke. He was addressing his congregation at the time and asking them how they be respecting me.
It appears that he has forgotten that he is merely a vehicle through which God's word is sent. His congregation is not required to honor him in any way. They are obligated to respect God.
Because he wasn't able to purchase a high-end watch, he insulted them by calling them poor, broke, busted, and disgusted.
He then on to inquire as to whether or not they believe he is deserving of their Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and Prada.
Funderburke becomes quite boisterous and proclaims that one can get a Movado watch at Costco. He made the request twelve months ago, and here we are in August, and he still does not have one.
The video was uploaded to TikTok by @KansasCityDefender, who stated in the caption that It's preachers like these that gives the church a terrible name.
We are perplexed as to the reason why a generation has abandoned the church. It's due to avarice and disrespectful behavior on both sides.
When more people in the United States attended church and had faith in the saving power of God, we were accorded a higher level of respect. We had much more love for our fellow citizens of the United States. We did not have drag queens reading to children; politicians did not demand that we let our preschoolers alter their gender; and the number of people killed in mass shootings was not nearly as high as it is today.
It is written in James 1:17 that "every good and perfect gift is from above." It's possible that Funderburke needs to keep that in mind. Instead of kneeling down in front of his congregation and begging that they buy him a Movado watch, he ought to be on his knees praying. All of the presents that he ought to be looking for should come from on high.
The video of the pastor publicly humiliating members of his church went viral, and many people have voiced their anger and outrage at the fact that he would talk to people in such a manner. When they went out to promote the gospel, Jesus demanded that everyone keep a specific appearance. The upkeep of a particular way of life was entirely their responsibility.
He really doesn't grasp it.
First, Funderburke waited until the video had at least 500,000 views before issuing an apology for his behavior. He added that the footage had been taken out of context, but he did speak to those who are accountable to him and he has asked for forgiveness from his church. He went on to say that no context will probably be sufficient to describe the hurt and frustration caused by my words, which was his explanation.
It is wonderful that he issued an apology; yet, the congregation at his church was still deeply affected by his statements. How many individuals were irritated to the point where they left the event in disgust? They left before they could get an apology, or they didn't believe that his apology was adequate for their needs, so they departed.
Words matter. And what are we left with when the church is unable to give a meaningful message that contributes to bringing society together?
In response to the sermon that was being delivered, one individual stated in the comments section of TikTok: "The nerve of him to make me choose between the biscuits at Red Lobster and Him." And this brings us to the crux of the issue with today's culture. The biscuits are being selected by an excessive number of people.
