Four big-city mayors got grilled in Congress this week over their sanctuary city policies. Republicans accused them of breaking the law and putting Americans in danger by shielding illegal immigrants. The hearing turned heated as lawmakers demanded answers.
Rep. Gary Palmer didn’t hold back. He told the mayors they broke their oath to uphold the Constitution by defying federal immigration laws. “You declared your cities sanctuary cities illegally,” Palmer said. He argued federal law trumps local rules, and these policies let criminals stay on the streets.
The mayors of Boston, Chicago, Denver, and New York defended their cities. Boston’s mayor Michelle Wu claimed they don’t track immigration status. When asked how much taxpayer money goes to services for illegals, she said, “We do not have a number.” Critics called this irresponsible.
Sanctuary policies don’t make cities safer. They attract illegal immigrants who drain resources like schools and hospitals. Police can’t work with federal agents to remove criminals here illegally. This puts communities at risk. Some studies say crime isn’t lower in sanctuary cities, despite what liberals claim.
Rep. Clay Higgins showed a photo of a man killed by an illegal immigrant. “Your policies have consequences,” he said. Higgins, a former cop, blasted the mayors for ignoring ICE and letting dangerous people stay. “America is fed up,” he warned.
The White House is cracking down. New orders cut funding to cities that block immigration enforcement. Taxpayer money shouldn’t reward lawbreaking. States like Alabama and Texas already ban sanctuary policies. More should follow.
These mayors care more about politics than people. They prioritize illegal immigrants over citizens. Boston’s mayor even offered sympathy to a violent migrant’s family instead of the victims. It’s backwards and un-American.
Congress must hold these leaders accountable. Sanctuary cities violate the rule of law. Americans deserve safety and fairness. It’s time to put citizens first and enforce immigration laws. No more excuses.
